A pleasure long treasured and lost is mine again...
Most of these songs were issued on a Roulette LP around 1959, titled "Jimmie's Golden Year" if I recall it correctly. I wore that darn thing out between the age of 15 and age 17 or so, and memorized all the lyrics, although I can't sing aloud without shame. I bought the CD version earlier this month, and I just played it twice through in the car during a long drive. This is folk/pop, performed just about as well as it ever could be. I have heard many of these tunes performed by others, but Rodgers' versions are among the best. (Well, maybe the Clancy Brothers take on "Waltzing Matilda" is equal to his...different enough so that both versions are worth owning.) I like everything on this, but the more uptempo songs are the bigger successes, simply because they are fun to sing along with, whether silly or a love song. "Woman From Liberia" does not make much sense logically, and when I first purchased the record at about age 14, I didn't like it. A week or so later, it had become my favorite cut of all of them. I don't know why, it just makes me happy. There are moments when the "backing vocals" intrude on the joy of hearing Jimmie's pure voice, but that was common in pop and rock music in that era. The record companies did not even trust such distinctly wonderful voices as Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, Rosemary Clooney or Doris Day to carry many two-minute songs alone. If you want clean lyrics, clear singing, brisk accompaniment and a jolly good time, buy this before it goes out of print. Get a used copy if you have to. Jimmie is obscure now, having been tragically injured in a police incident around 1960 and coming back a couple of years later to a music industry which had moved past his best style. My, though, how good these performances are!
The best of Jimmy Rodgers
The music reminds me of a time when the kids were little and we would be traveling somewhere, this was our music to travel by. I passed a CD to my niece and she states the same.
Very good Cd
This cd is for my mother her birthday, but I want to know which titles the singers have. Because I only know the Title "Kisses sweeter than wine" Than I here the cd.
He was a very good singer!
