Near-perfect reissue of a classic concert

Would you believe how long it took them to put this sucker out? Too long, that's how long. Almost fifty years! I know I pretty much said the same thing for Mingus' recent archival release, but the truth is both are must-haves. The track list is mainly made up of Monk favorites, including the eccentric "Epistrophy" (which Coltrane totally does justice to), the always beautiful "Crepscule with Nellie"; "Bye-Ya", with an otherworldly melody; and an uptempo "Evidence", as well as the somber "Monk's Mood". Like Monk, Coltrane has all kinds of distinctive nuances in his playing, which makes him a perfect fit for Monk's compositions: he contributes an incredibly creative solo to "Bye-Ya". The only part where the album falls apart is the ten-minute standard "Sweet and Lovely". Elsewhere, he again shows what he can do with a form as familiar as the blues ("Blue Monk") or just has all kinds of fun ("Nutty").
Be there with them at Carnegie Hall
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall captures everything that should have been recorded at the 5 Spot. I would spend 2 or 3 nites a week listening to each of the Monk groups. This recording has it all. Great work by every member of the ensemble. A recording to be cherished. Played over and over again. You hear more with each listen. It's one of the great recordings of great artists doing what they do best...making music. Buy the CD and be there with them at Carnegie Hall.
Perfect
It is astounding to hear Coltrane at once so much himself as and at the same time so completely in the thrall of Monk's music. It is astounding to hear Monk give Coltrane liberties no other saxophonist ever received in a Monk group, a tribute to both Coltrane's genius and Monk's judgment. From the second track on, the music is exquisite, especially the wonderful take on "Blue Monk." But if you have only eight minutes in your life to listen to utterly perfect music, spend them listening to the first track, "Monk's Mood," which is Mozartian in its absolute purity. Monk sounds as if he is having the time of his life running fills behind Coltrane's solo, daring him, challenging him, and the results are beyond what a music-lover could hope for. (For an amusing comparison, listen to Coltrane's earlier Riverside recording of that piece earlier in his relationship with Monk; the saxophonist sounds as if he is doing everything in his power just to get a handle on the music. By the Carnegie Hall concert, Coltrane has mastered the piece and made it his own.) Shadow Wilson, who died so young, might have been the most musical drummer ever to play regularly in a Monk ensemble, and his melodic cymbal work should not be overlooked.
